Project Superintendent – San Diego

San Diego, CA · Full-time

We're building a lean California field organization for larger restoration, reconstruction, renovation, and construction projects. This is a field-first Project Superintendent role with a defined growth path: you run real projects in the San Diego territory from day one, earn more through project performance bonuses, and as you demonstrate you can run a whole territory to our bar, you step into a regional leadership role.

Your mission

Turn approved scopes and plans into safe, predictable field progress. You will be Apex Works' local authority on the job: keeping subcontractors, inspectors, stakeholders, materials, access, quality, and the short-term schedule aligned.

What you'll own

  • Lead field execution across multiple concurrent projects within a defined regional territory
  • Build and maintain short-interval plans, milestone schedules, and subcontractor sequencing
  • Confirm jobsite readiness, access, deliveries, temporary facilities, protection, and daily logistics
  • Coordinate permit follow-up, jurisdiction comments, inspections, and onsite meetings with inspectors
  • Direct subcontractors within their approved scopes and verify manpower, materials, quality, and completion
  • Coordinate owners, property managers, designers, engineers, utilities, neighbors, and other stakeholders in the field
  • Read plans and specifications, identify conflicts early, document field conditions, and drive answers before work is blocked
  • Reject deficient work, stop unsafe work, maintain progress evidence, and own punch and field closeout
  • Escalate scope, price, contract, safety, and material schedule risk early with facts and a recommended next step

How the lean team works

Apex leadership handles estimating, contracts, pricing, change-order approval, billing, accounting, insurance administration, and back-office production. You provide accurate field information and own execution. Simple digital and AI-assisted workflows help turn your photos, notes, commitments, and exceptions into reports and follow-up without adding layers of coordinators.

Your field authority

  • Set daily sequence and site logistics within the approved plan
  • Direct subcontractors within signed scopes and require correction of deficient work
  • Call for inspections, coordinate field access, and stop work for safety or quality risk
  • Recommend recovery plans and ordinary field solutions; commercial or scope changes require written approval

What you bring (required)

  • 5+ years of construction field leadership across restoration, reconstruction, renovation, or general construction
  • Evidence that you have run several active projects without daily supervision
  • Strong plan reading, subcontractor coordination, inspection, sequencing, logistics, safety, and quality-control judgment
  • A record of finding constraints early, communicating bad news honestly, and closing the last ten percent
  • Clear communication with clients, inspectors, design professionals, subcontractors, and internal leadership
  • Based within reasonable driving distance of projects in the San Diego territory, with a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and regular regional availability
  • Comfort using a phone and straightforward digital tools for schedules, photos, daily evidence, and commitments

How success is measured

  • Milestone reliability and recovery speed when conditions change
  • Inspection pass rate, safety, quality, and punch-list closure
  • Subcontractor readiness and commitments kept
  • Early, accurate documentation of risk, field conditions, and decisions needed
  • Clean handoffs, closeout, and stakeholder confidence

The growth path

This role is designed to grow into regional leadership. As you demonstrate reliable milestones, clean documentation, and sound field judgment across projects, you take on a full territory — and when you can run it to our bar, you step into the Regional Project Superintendent role and its compensation. We'd rather promote someone who proved it here than hire a stranger off the street.

Compensation

  • $58,000–$78,000 base salary, depending on demonstrated field leadership and project scope
  • Project performance bonus tied to milestone reliability, quality, inspections, documentation, and closeout — real upside on top of base from day one
  • Defined path to Regional Project Superintendent compensation — pay scales up as you take on a territory and its authority, reviewed against clear field bars, not tenure
  • Safety, candor, required quality, and documented change control are payout gates—not tradeoffs
  • Necessary approved business travel is reimbursed under a written policy; ordinary commuting is not reimbursed
  • A company vehicle or fuel card may be assigned during high-mileage project phases

Benefits

  • W-2 employment — steady payroll, taxes withheld, workers' comp covered
  • Company health insurance
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
